Seaside Aquarium Scholarship

The Seaside Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast. Founded in 1937, family members of the original founders continue to participate in its operation. Seaside Aquarium is very involved in community affairs , is well known locally and even internationally, for its friendly seals. Most of the seals are descendants of seals who were in the aquarium more than 80 years ago. The aquarium is also home to more than 100 species of marine life. It is proud to be involved in public awareness programs such as Marine Mammal Stranding, the Seaside Beach Discovery Program, Sea Week, Haystack Rock Awareness Program and the Wildlife Center of the North Coast as well as other marine education tours and activities for school children.Scholarship applicants should be interested in and excited about marine life and marine environment, seeking degrees in science teaching/education, forestry, marine or fisheries biology, parks and recreation, environmental law or engineering or natural resource planning.

  • Graduating Senior from Seaside High School
  • G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • Must be an Oregon resident for at least one year by the time of the award
  • Applicants must be planning on entering a two or four-year accredited higher education institution
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to marine life. This could be from classes taken in high school, volunteering in the community (including the aquarium or related programs, ie the Discovery Program, Haystack Rock, etc.) or paid work, involving marine life/environment
  • Career goals should relate to communicating, interpreting, researching and preserving nature’s wonder by way of or seeking degrees in science teaching/education, forestry, marine or fisheries biology, parks and recreation, environmental law or engineering or natural resource planning.  All similar marine life/environmental areas can also be considered
  • Within six months of receiving full or partial disbursement of funds, recipients agree to provide a brief letter report about their college status and activities
  • This scholarship is renewable for 3 more years (4 years total).  To be eligible for renewal you must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher be seeking degrees in science teaching/education, forestry, marine or fisheries biology, parks and recreation, environmental law or engineering or natural resource planning.  All similar marine life/environmental areas can also be considered.  In order to request the payment for the second year and beyond you follow the same instructions each year as found on the Requesting Scholarships Funds page and text or email the info to Barb Knop:   e) bknop@pacifier.com     ph) 503.440.1298
