Chef John Newman Memorial Scholarship

(Additional Writing Requirement, see below)

Chef John Newman began his culinary career as a young boy cleaning crabs on Staten Island for tips. He had early memories of standing on a chair cooking popcorn. Food was often sparse for him. After working at different restaurants through high school, he landed at the Inn at Morro Bay in California while attending Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo. At the recommendation of Austrian Chef Bill Hoppe, who was a graduate of the CIA himself, John applied for and was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York after receiving his AA in Business. He was a West Coaster by heart but knew if he stayed by the Pacific Ocean he would not take his studies seriously with the surf calling his name. So with extended family in New York he moved across the country to pursue a culinary degree. John graduated in 1990 from the CIA and worked in Europe, New York, Hawaii and San Francisco before moving to Oregon. He was the Executive Chef at the Stephanie Inn for eight years and opened his own restaurant, Newmans at 988 in Cannon Beach in 2006 with his wife, Sandy. In 2012 John became the Culinary Instructor at Seaside High School where his students won the Oregon ProStart competition two years in a row, sending them to Nationals. John had a passion for cooking that was unmatched and he loved to encourage and mentor the next group of culinarians. This scholarship is to recognize his love for the community and future generations.
