Scholarship Information

We are honored by those who have chosen to dedicate a part of their legacy to the furtherance of Seaside Scholarships’ mission, and share the view that our children are our future.

When you apply to Seaside Scholarships, you are automatically considered for the following scholarships, which represent the legacy of community members committed to making higher education accessible for the students of this region. Seven of the below scholarships have additional requirements on top of filling out and submitting the common app: Jason Goodding Memorial Scholarship, Mr Knop Memorial Scholarship, Janice K. Martin Memorial Scholarship, Steve Martin Memorial Scholarship, Patrick S. Morrisson Memorial Scholarship, Chef John Newman Memorial Scholarship and Stadter Family Charitable Fund Scholarship. The requirements for those are listed below in BOLD within those individual scholarships.

Assistance League of the Columbia Pacific Scholarship

Assistance League of the Columbia Pacific believes that knowledge is the key to success in a young person’s life and that sometimes finding the funds to make education after high school possible can be a challenge for some young adults and their families.  Operation Scholarships is a brand new philanthropic program for 2022 whose goal is to promote continuing education for students in Clatsop County by providing scholarships to graduating high school students.

  • GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Volunteers hours and participation in their community
  • Responsible citizenship including social media
  • Attending an Oregon community college, trade school or specialty education training program

Noah Brien Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Noah Brien who passed away at the age of 23 on April 21, 2022, while working in Idaho and chasing his dreams of becoming a lineman.  Noah grew up in Clatsop County and graduated from Seaside High School in 2017, where he earned many awards.  He went on to attend Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College in Asheville, North Carolina.  Noah attended Northwest Line Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee/Vocational Outside Line Training Academy and graduated second to top in his class in December 2021.  Noah had an unmatched work ethic and skill set.  He made lifelong friends everywhere he worked and always had encouraging words and the biggest smile for the people he served.  He loved adventure and was an avid sportsman.

Cannon Beach American Legion Scholarship

Cannon Beach American Legion Post 168 was established in 1948. A community center that strives to give to past, present, and future generations, the Cannon Beach American Legion is heavily involved in local events and charities. One of those is the scholarship program for local students. The Cannon Beach American Legion believes it is their duty to give back to their community and this is one of the many ways they do.

This scholarship can be used for post-high school training at any trade/technical or business school, two- or four-year college or university.

Patrick D. Dillian Memorial Scholarship

Patrick Dillian was the devoted husband of Effie Dillian, who was once a Home Economics teacher at SHS. She established the scholarship in 1946.  This scholarship will go to a graduate of Seaside High School who has shown in daily associations with others qualities of outstanding leadership; of being humane; and of cooperation, honesty, kindness, consideration, and intelligence, and who will attend school within the Oregon University System.

Evergreen Masonic Lodge Scholarship

Evergreen Masonic Lodge No. 137 AF & AM was chartered June 17, 1909 and has served South Clatsop County in many community service projects. This scholarship provides educational and vocational opportunities to Seaside High School graduates who exhibit good character, a strong work ethic and dedication to serving others.

Robert Filori Memorial Scholarship

Robert Filori was an educator on the northwest coast for thirty five years. Affectionately called “Uncle Bob” or “Mr. Gold Tooth” by many of his students, Bob believed all students had the ability to achieve and that education was the way to accomplish that. After surviving childhood polio and two tours of duty in Vietnam, Bob worked his way through college. With the help of the G. I. Bill, and at times living in a tool shed or basement, he reached his goal of becoming a teacher. Bob was a business teacher, a coach, an administrator and a devoted family man. He spent his life encouraging people to reach for their dreams. Bob’s family established this scholarship to continue his legacy of education and to assist students to achieve their life’s goal.

Friends of Haystack Rock Scholarship

Purpose: Support and promote young leaders from the Seaside School District planning to pursue environmental, marine science, or ornithological studies. The intent of the scholarship is to encourage local youth involvement in the Haystack Rock Awareness Program (HRAP) and Friends of Haystack Rock (FOHR), and support and encourage their education efforts in these areas of study.

  • Graduating Senior from Seaside High School
  • Candidate plans to pursue studies and degree in environmental, marine science, or ornithological studies
  • Attends a community college or 4 year university or college
  • Candidate has volunteered and/or worked for HRAP or FOHR for at least 25 hours in the past 12-24 months
  • Candidate has demonstrated leadership and interest in these areas of study, during their time at Seaside High School as evidenced by their extracurricular activities and/or recommendations from science teacher(s).
  • Past scholarship recipients can reapply, annually, for additional scholarship funds for an additional 3 years (1 recipient can apply 3 additional years). To be eligible for renewal you must:
  • maintain a G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher
  • have a declared major in in environmental, marine science, or ornithological studies or related field
  • attest that you have worked or volunteered in your field of study or a related field of study for at least 25 hours since receipt of the scholarship.
  • provide one recommendation letter from a college professor, advisor, volunteer, or work supervisor in their field or a related field.

Gene Gilbertson Memorial Scholarship

To honor the memory of Gene “G” Gilbertson, we are pleased to introduce the Gene Gilbertson Memorial Scholarship.  Gene moved to Seaside in 1965 to teach physical education and coach basketball and track.  After earning a library degree from Portland State University, he served as librarian at Central School, Cannon Beach Elementary School, Broadway Middle School and Seaside High School.  In 1973, he was hired as head track coach at Seaside High School, retiring in 2007.  Numerous students and athletes were impacted by his encouragement, inspiration and his ability to see the potential in all.  He relished in the countless individuals and athletes personal accomplishments, especially personal bests both large and small.  Even with his many state championships and honors, his favorite stories always involved individual perseverance.  The accomplishments over the years were a testament to his ability to motivate people to achieve success they may have believed beyond their capabilities.

Jason M. Goodding Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded in memory of Sgt. Jason M. Goodding. Jason was a member of the Seaside Police Department who was tragically killed in the line of duty in February of 2016. Jason was a valuable member of our community who served our town as a police officer, devoted husband and father, mentor, coach, and school volunteer. This scholarship was established as a memorial for Sgt. Goodding. The money can be used for educational expenses at any two or four year institution and will be awarded directly to the school upon full-time enrollment. To be eligible, the recipient must pursue a career in a law enforcement related field or a career in education.

Jandrall-Babcock Memorial Scholarship

The Jandrall-Babcock scholarship was established by Seaside High School classes 1931 through 1939, named for John Jandrall, Principal of Seaside High School from 1922-1953 and Samuel Babcock, Principal of Seaside Central School from 1923-1953. In establishing a scholarship trust in the names of their principals, these SHS graduates gave substance to their educators’ memories and aided many future students. In their words, what better way to do we have to express our gratitude to those old halls of learning? If we live generously, we can live forever! This award can be used for post-high school training at any technical or professional school, or two- or four-year college or university.  Selection will be from those applying who have not received $1000 or more in Seaside High School Local Scholarships in the current year. If no applicants qualify, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Mr. Knop Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Mike “The Wheel” Knop lived life to the fullest. He had a vast range of interests and a deep knowledge in a variety of subjects.  Mike brought passion to each endeavor and mastered everything he set out to do. Jazz, fly fishing, horses, astronomy, shellfish, brewing  award-winning beer, cooking and baseball to name a few.  Whether he was explaining the upside of a new fly pattern, identifying a cluster of stars in the sky, or demonstrating proper technique when opening an oyster, he was an undeniable expert.  Mike insisted on knowing how things worked and meticulously studied each subject in order to master the art.  His vast knowledge was built through a genuine curiosity and an ability to listen.  Mike asked thoughtful questions and his desire to know was sincere.  He had a desire and willingness to share his knowledge with those who demonstrated interest.  Mike was a craftsman and detail was of the utmost importance.  His patience and attention to detail produced work that only Mike could create. The recipient of this scholarship must greatly enjoy life and possess the ability to appreciate the small things.  Students must have a passion for detail and a strong ambition to wholeheartedly master each endeavor.  The recipient must possess the desire to teach and pass along the expertise they have garnered though life.  Finally, these attributes must be combined with a sense of humor and energy that can lift an entire room. We all know that life will never be the same without Mike Knop but by recognizing students who live life though Mike’s enduring lens, we are doing right by the person we’ll never forget.

Lorian (Lory) Louis Marlantes Memorial Scholarship

Mr. Marlantes, a 1961 SHS graduate, was an outstanding student, athlete, and leader who served as class president all four years. Voted “Most Likely to Succeed”, he graduated Phi Beta Kappa in economics at University of Washington, was a Fulbright Scholar, and earned a masters and a doctoral degree in economics from Stanford University. Mr. Marlantes held executive positions with Exxon Corporation and Penn Central Corporation before he joined the Rockefeller Group in 1982 as vice president. As the time of his death, not only was he still serving as C.E.O. of the Rockefeller Group but was also teaching graduate students at Columbia University in business economics. In 2001 Mr. Marlantes was a member of the inaugural group of Seaside High School Hall of Fame inductees. This scholarship can be used for educational expenses at any U.S. trade/technical or business school, or two- or four-year college or university.

Steve Martin Memorial Scholarship

The Steve Martin Memorial Scholarship was established in Steve’s memory after he passed in 2000.  Steve was well known for his hospitality businesses, particularly in Cannon Beach.  This scholarship focuses on community involvement and leadership qualities in the Seaside High graduates. The award may be used for post-high school training at any trade/technical or business school, two or four year college or university.

Janice K. Martin Memorial Scholarship

The Jan Martin Memorial Scholarship was established after Jan passed in February 2018.  Jan’s hospitality and giving demeanor was well respected in Clatsop County, particularly Cannon Beach.  This scholarship will go to a Seaside High graduate who shows leadership among peers and has been involved by volunteering in the community. The award may be used for post-high school training at any trade/technical or business school, two or four year college or university.

Patrick S. Morrison Memorial Scholarship

A lifelong learner and educator of many students in Clatsop County, including 10 years in the Seaside School District, Patrick was a staunch supporter of equal access to education.  His work with the Seaside School District was in 4th grade, the Talented and Gifted Program (when there was still an individual program) and 3rd grade in Cannon Beach.  He retired from Clatsop Community College as a guidance counselor working with middle school students in the Educational Talent Search Program.  He also spent a few summers working with high school students in the Upward Bound Program.  His motto was “Readers are Leaders” and he fostered the love of learning in all students.  Retiring in the community he served, Patrick was delighted whenever his path crossed with former students and he went out of his way to keep in touch.  When he passed away in February 2021, his family wanted to honor his memory with scholarships to students who are the first in their families to attend institutes of higher learning, whether it be a two or four year college or technical/vocational school.

Chef John Newman Memorial Scholarship

Chef John Newman began his culinary career as a young boy cleaning crabs on Staten Island for tips. He had early memories of standing on a chair cooking popcorn. Food was often sparse for him. After working at different restaurants through high school, he landed at the Inn at Morro Bay in California while attending Cuesta Community College in San Luis Obispo. At the recommendation of Austrian Chef Bill Hoppe, who was a graduate of the CIA himself, John applied for and was accepted to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York after receiving his AA in Business. He was a West Coaster by heart but knew if he stayed by the Pacific Ocean he would not take his studies seriously with the surf calling his name. So with extended family in New York he moved across the country to pursue a culinary degree. John graduated in 1990 from the CIA and worked in Europe, New York, Hawaii and San Francisco before moving to Oregon. He was the Executive Chef at the Stephanie Inn for eight years and opened his own restaurant, Newmans at 988 in Cannon Beach in 2006 with his wife, Sandy. In 2012 John became the Culinary Instructor at Seaside High School where his students won the Oregon ProStart competition two years in a row, sending them to Nationals. John had a passion for cooking that was unmatched and he loved to encourage and mentor the next group of culinarians. This scholarship is to recognize his love for the community and future generations.

Pacific Northwest Chief Warrant Officer Association Scholarship

Representing Active Duty, Reservist and Retired US Coast Guard  Chief Warrant Officers since 1929.  Seeking opportunities to build relationships and provide assistance within the communities we serve.

Dorene Raterman Memorial Scholarship

Dorene Raterman’s future was bright. She was smart. She was athletic and dedicated to her team and teammates. She was beautiful and her smile reflected a sense of joy about her. People wanted to be near her; she had the love of many friends, her teachers, and her family. Dorene’s death still touches the community. Thanks to the generosity of the Raterman family, thousands of dollars have been given to Seaside High School graduates in honor of Dorene. The Dorene Raterman Scholarship recipient is a young woman who is active in her community, in athletics, and is respected and liked by her peers and teachers.

Wendy Richardson Memorial Scholarship

Wendy was a woman of radiant grace and she touched the heart of every person she met. Throughout her life she was able to brighten a day with a smile, a warm touch, or an outreached hand. She would always stand up to help others or volunteer her time and efforts when necessary. Her warmth spread up and down Clatsop County, being involved in events and commerce from Cannon Beach to Astoria. Above all, Wendy was an amazing mother and felt so much pride for her kids. Humble and gracious, Wendy was a beacon in our community for her service and giving. This memorial scholarship was set up in her name by those who loved her. Wendy accepted and loved all walks of life, and the recipient of this award is someone who would show that supporting attitude and involvement in the community.

Dr. Sheila Eagan Roley Scholarship Fund

Seaside Superintendent Sheila Roley retired June 30th 2020 after 30 years with the district.  She had many roles in her tenure: middle school science teacher, director of curriculum and instruction, Cannon Beach Elementary principal, Broadway Middle School principal, and the first woman as principal at Seaside High School and as Superintendent of the District.  In celebration of their mom’s service and trailblazing leadership, her children (Emily, Robert and Liam) have established the Dr. Sheila Eagan Roley Scholarship Fund.  This will be a 4-year, need-based scholarship awarded to a graduating SHS senior (or former SHS graduate who may not have had the opportunity to pursue more education following high school) who has shown a commitment to service, activism and social justice.  Preference will be given to students who will be first-generation college students.

School Runnings Scholarship

This award is funded by teachers that run the Hood to Coast Relay and can be used for educational expenses at any two or four year college, trade/technical school or business school.

Seaside Aquarium Scholarship

The Seaside Aquarium is one of the oldest aquariums on the West Coast. Founded in 1937, family members of the original founders continue to participate in its operation. Seaside Aquarium is very involved in community affairs , is well known locally and even internationally, for its friendly seals. Most of the seals are descendants of seals who were in the aquarium more than 80 years ago. The aquarium is also home to more than 100 species of marine life. It is proud to be involved in public awareness programs such as Marine Mammal Stranding, the Seaside Beach Discovery Program, Sea Week, Haystack Rock Awareness Program and the Wildlife Center of the North Coast as well as other marine education tours and activities for school children.Scholarship applicants should be interested in and excited about marine life and marine environment, seeking degrees in science teaching/education, forestry, marine or fisheries biology, parks and recreation, environmental law or engineering or natural resource planning.

  • Must be an Oregon resident for at least one year by the time of the award
  • Applicants must be planning on entering a two or four-year accredited higher education institution
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in and commitment to marine life. This could be from classes taken in high school, volunteering in the community (including the aquarium or related programs, ie the Discovery Program, Haystack Rock, etc.) or paid work, involving marine life/environment
  • Career goals should relate to communicating, interpreting, researching and preserving nature’s wonder by way of or seeking degrees in science teaching/education, forestry, marine or fisheries biology, parks and recreation, environmental law or engineering or natural resource planning.  All similar marine life/environmental areas can also be considered
  • Within six months of receiving full or partial disbursement of funds, recipients agree to provide a brief letter report about their college status and activities

Stadter Family Charitable Fund Scholarship

John Stadter is a 1973 graduate of Seaside High School.  He was an average student, more interested in “social activities” than scholarship; content to work as a baker at Harrison’s Bakery. Two years after graduation, following a breakup with a girlfriend, he was driving back from Portland and saw a sign that would forever change his life, “Lewis & Clark College Next Right”. Frustrated with the direction of his life, he took the exit and enrolled. Using summer jobs, work study, loans, grants and scholarships he graduated in 1979 with a double major in Economics and Business Administration. Over the ensuing years he developed entrepreneurial skills in early stage tech companies. Seeking to control his own destiny he started three different companies before finding success in the Call Center industry; founding a company that grew to more than 2000 colleagues before selling it in 2019. This scholarship is to support a student who is committed to radically changing the direction of their life.

  • Minimum GPA of 2.5 preferred but depending on situation the minimum can be waived.

Carol Stutesman Scholarship

Carol Stutesman taught at Seaside High School for 29 years and left the bulk of her estate for scholarships to Seaside High School graduating seniors.  Her generosity fits the life and effort she gave to students at Seaside High School during her teaching career.  As a business teacher, volleyball coach, basketball coach, and softball coach, Carol lived a life of dedication and excellence for her students and coworkers.   Carol was always striving to give her students the most up to date information in a quickly changing field.  She was fun loving, demanding, loyal, kind and generous.  Her special brand of earthy sensibility caused many of her players and students to keep in touch with her well beyond their high school years.

Toyooka Family Scholarship

The Toyooka Family Scholarship provides educational and vocational opportunities to Seaside High School graduates who exhibit good character, a strong work ethic and dedication to serving others. We are dedicated to helping students identify and pursue their career goals and to make a successful transition from high school to adult life, with the ultimate goal of developing college-educated leaders who impact their community in positive ways. The money from this award may be used for tuition expenses at any four-year college or university.

Takeko “Susie” Wahl Memorial Scholarship

Takeko Wahl was born in Karatsu Japan on January 6, 1933.  She grew up in difficult war-time Japan.  After high school she attended secretarial school in Sasebo where she met Charles Wahl who was in the Navy and stationed in Sasebo.  They fell in love and were married and had their children, Joe and Kim, while serving in Sasebo.  Takeko would always say that Charles was the love of her life.  After Charles passed away in 1959, Takeko moved the family to Gearhart to raise their children and be close to Charles’ mother and sister who lived in the area.  Takeko worked for many years for Seaside High School where she touched generations of students who were inspired with her many Asian styled specialty dishes and where she later introduced and managed the “snack bar”.   One of the high lights of her time there was assisting the world-renowned chef James Beard in his famous cooking school.  During this time, she had the opportunity to meet and get to know many well-known chefs at this cooking school. After retiring from Seaside High School, Takeko volunteered at the community center and in the community by teaching knitting, cooking, Tai Chi and Xi Gong. She was a regular “host” to many Japanese exchange students.

Timothy S. Williams Memorial Scholarship

Tim’s expertise was in computers. In the 1960s and 1970s when there were no courses in computer related subject matter, Tim created the course and taught it. Tim spent his entire career in the technology field. He owned several companies and wrote software, operating systems in particular. After spending 40 years in the San Francisco area, he moved to Gearhart. He loved movies, travel and his Harley. Tim was a believer in lifelong learning. This scholarship was established by his wife and his sister to help students begin that process of lifelong learning in some aspect of the computer technology field.
